Mr. Edwards was the editor of a newspaper in the early 1900’s called The Eye Opener and he was considered witty, pugnacious, and irascible. In 1977, Alberta Theatre Projects created the Bob Edwards award to honour a Canadian icon who has portrayed certain qualities of the award’s namesake.

In 2012, Alberta Theatre Projects gifted the Award event to the Calgary Public Library Foundation in recognition of the Library’s Centennial. The Bob Edwards Award Gala, as it is now known, is the signature fundraising event for the Foundation which in 2012 raised over $100,000 in support of Building Readers for Life at the Calgary Public Library.
